My Tips & Tricks for entertaining your dreadlocks in winter

During the winter season it is important to take good care of your dreads and your scalp.

This article will explain how to implement a simple daily routine to keep your dreads moisturised even in cold and wet weather. Here are some tips and expert advice on how to maintain your dreads throughout the winter.

The most important thing this winter is to continue to have your dreads maintained by a specialist

Regular visits to a specialised salon to adapt specific treatments to your hair will guarantee good maintenance.

If your dreads have just been created (between 1 and 6 months), it is important to support their growth and maintain them. Analyse the health of your scalp and act immediately if you notice any problems. Until the stage of pre-mature dreads (6 months to 1.5 years), it is strongly advised to take them out every 3 months during the first year.

The more regular the maintenance of your dreads in the first year, the better your hairstyle will look in the following years.

Even in winter, maintain your dreadlocks but not in any way!

Use a dreadlocks shampoo adapted to your hair type (afro, fine, smooth, greasy...). Also adapt your shampoo to the quality of your scalp skin (not very oily, dry, allergies...).

Choose a care product adapted to your scal p for better hydration. This step is important because nourishing and soothing the scalp is essential to prepare your future hair change. This will help you avoid any discomfort and feel good about your dreads.

Be careful never to use classic shampoos from large stores that are not adapted to dreadlocks. The same goes for Marseille soap, which dries out the scalp too much and prevents it from growing.

The best hair products on the market validated by Dreads Expert

I recommend alternating between a solid shampoo from the Danish brand Raw Roots such as Muddy Luxuary and a liquid shampoo from the same brand, Hydrating Shampoo or Greenie Genie.

Muddy Luxuary shampoo lathers well and smells great. It contains moisturising oils and essential flower oils and is perfectly suited to both afro and European dreaded hair.

Hydrating Shampoo and Greenie Genie are recommended especially for new dreadlocks.

I recommend the product Rescue Tonic and the moisturizing oil from the Danish brand Raw Roots. Indeed and I insist on this point because a healthy scalp is essential to wear dreadlocks.

How to wash your dreadlocks?

Ideally you should wash your dreadlocks once a week or once every 10 days. My tip is to wash them in the morning to avoid going to sleep with wet dreads.

1- You must press the wet dreads well so that all the water drops escape before tightening them in a towel.

2- Leave the towel on your head for 15 to 20 minutes and then dry them with a second towel, pressing on your dreadlocks to make sure they are dry.

3- Finally, we finish with a hair dryer.

If you don't dry your dreads properly or if you sleep with wet dreads, dandruff or even a form of fungus may appear on your scalp. What's more, these are often accompanied by an unpleasant smell. So don't forget that your dreads are alive and that they need proper care!

Common signs and symptoms of a stressed scalp

The skin is dry and itchy: scaling

Tight scalp: dandruff or small fungi on the skin

Your skin becomes dehydrated: you don't drink enough water

The right gestures to soothe and comfort your scalp

1- Keep each dread in its place and separate as it needs room at its root to continue growing.

2- Also, to prevent your dreads from merging, carefully cut the tangled hair to separate them. This is more comfortable than pulling each hair apart, however you can ask someone else to help you.

3 - Apply the drops of Raw Roots moisturising oil to your entire scalp and massage. Leave on for at least 2 hours before washing. However, if your scalp is very dry, I advise you to leave the drops on overnight and wash your dreads the next day.

4- Apply Rescue Tonic 5-7 days after your scalp treatment. Alternating moisturizing oil and Rescue Tonic will eliminate all the discomfort that can be experienced when wearing dreadlocks and leave your scalp feeling healthy!
